Nuts … I’ve got em

Found the mother load today
Do you remember a few weeks back when I asked for some acorn tops? No? Well I did, and I couldn’t find any. I was working on a picture frame for my friends Dave and Angela. You can see the final product here. I spent two or three days looking around the neighborhood for some and had no luck. Who know, I should have just gone in my back yard. To see what I found today while raking up some leaves, check out this video I just posted to YouTube.

Today’s shot: Lighting the lighthouse
Here’s another one from the lighthouse on Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Yes, I tried to open that door to see if I could get to the top … but no go.

Officially on vacation

A week to do whatever the hell I want
I’m off all week and it’s going to be so nice. I plan on hanging out with Stella, clearing a ton of leaves out of my backyard, maybe getting Steph a new truck, and maybe take some photos if I can find the time. Then, there’s a holiday and Friday shopping thrown in there. I’m going to need a ton of energy for this week’s activities. Hence the shot of the Byron power plant I’m showing today.

The potty train

Stella’s going to hate me for this one in about 10 years
We’ve been hitting the potty training pretty hard lately. Stella’s gone a few times, but she still doesn’t quite get the concept. She says “I’m going,” but I think she just associates sitting on the toilet as “going.” And look, she likes to read on the potty … just like daddy!

Stuck in a rut, try “Stuck On Earth”

This FREE iPad app is where it’s at
One of the coolest, neatest apps came out for the iPad today. It’s called “Stuck On Earth” and it was designed by Trey Ratcliff from Stuck In Customs. I caught wind of it a few weeks ago when I tried to get into the beta. I’m not that cool or lucky so I didn’t get in, but the app was released this week and it’s awesome. If you’re a photographer or into photography and are looking to take pictures somewhere, like on a vacation or a small trip, the this app is revolutionary.

I’ve been playing with it all night. Basically, you can zoom in on a map and check out tons of pics from a certain place if it’s been tagged. I used Rockford as an example and it pulls all the cool pictures from Flickr in and shows you the best places to take photos in Rockford. I even found some of my photos in there, which was very cool. There’s also a section for the “best in the world.” Like the 50 best waterfalls or 50 best caves. Click here to check out Trey’s demo video.

So, I’m off next week …

What should I shoot
I’m off all next week and would like to get some ideas for some photo shoots. I have some stuff planned, but wondered if anyone had some cool ideas that are fairly local. Drop me a line and let me know.

Today’s shot: I’ll eat your head
This guy was yawning as I passed by his cage at the Milwaukee County Zoo. I’ll admit, I got luck and walked by right as he did it so there wasn’t much planning.

Making my mark

Taking on product shots this weekend
I’ve been hired to do some product shots for a Web site this weekend and I wanted to get some test shots so I don’t look like a fool. I built a quick back drop for about $15 with some PVC pipe, some A clamps and a roll of black construction paper (which has a white side too, awesome!). I set up a bottle of one of my favorite spirits as a subject and I think the results are pretty good. I might make few adjustments. Now, where’s that can of Coke?

Print giveaway goes to Brian Cascio

Congrats, Brian and thanks to everyone for stopping by Saturday night
My dad and I had a great time on Saturday night in Byron. We had a large crowd show up for our art show at Hailey’s Winery. I didn’t sell much, in fact I think I spent more money on wine. I also mentioned I’d be giving away a print here on my site tonight. Only 10 people left a comment in the original post and I used Random to help me pick a winner and it chose the number 2. Brian Cascio left the second comment so he wins the print of his choice.

Today’s shot: Brown Sugar Cookies
I saw this cookie recipe on Pinterest a few days ago and wanted to try them. Pinterest is a great site. I suggest you all join. In a nut shell, it gathers all the best stuff from the internet and puts them into an easy-to-read Web page. So, I had saved the ingredients to my iPhone and Stella and I picked up the goods while at the grocery store today. She even helped me make them. I can honestly say they are the best cookies I’ve ever made. My mom would be proud. For the recipe, click here.

Want one of my prints for free?

Leave a comment and share on Facebook or Google+
I just reached my 100th post on my blog and to say thanks to everyone for reading and viewing I’m going to give away a matted print to someone here on my Web site. The rules are simple, just leave a comment on this post and then share this post on Facebook or Google+ using the buttons at the bottom of the post. I’ll assign a random number to each person who comments and then use Random to select a winner. All you’ll have to do is buy a frame and hang it on your wall. I’ll even cover the shipping charges if it goes to someone out of town.

The offer will end Sunday night and Monday I’ll contact the winner via email and he or she will get to choose from one of my matted prints I currently have available.

If you’d like see some of my prints, I’ll be displaying some of them in Byron tomorrow (Saturday night) at Hailey’s Winnery on Rt. 2. The show goes from 6 to 9 p.m. and my dad will be joining me to show off some of his new prints. I had a sneak peak at them today and they are amazing.

I’ve made it 100 days!

Win one of my matted prints
Today marks my 100th post on my blog. I’d like to thank everyone who’s been reading and stopping by to see my photos and stories. I really do appreciate it. To show it I’m going to give away one of my new matted prints (your choice). I’ll even cover the shipping if you’re not local. The fun will start with tomorrow’s post. I’ll show a picture of all the prints I recently made and all you’ll have to do to win one is post a comment on my blog and then share my blog on Facebook or Google+. Tune in tomorrow for more details.

Today’s shot: Hey dad … catch anything?
My dad picked up fly fishing this summer while he was out in Montana and he and my uncle Ron took me to a sweet stream in the mountains one afternoon to catch some fish. I tried fly fishing, but just stuck with the regular rod and reel style. I caught my limit in brook trout and had a ton of fun. I might even pick up some equipment in the spring and start fishing around here.

What I use Wednesday: Bay Photo

Let’s make some prints
Where do most of you make prints? Walgreens? Woodmans? Walmart? In a quick pinch they all do fine. And they’re cheap. I’ve tried them all in my day and I’ve even used Mpix and Adoramapix for prints. But my favorite print shop is Bay Photo in California. They do amazing work, offer a lot of print sizes and products and customer service is fantastic. A few months ago I printed a 3-foot print and when I got it in the mail and opened it up for inspection I found a flaw in the print. I got online and chatted with their CS department and I had a replacement the next day. There prices are a bit more than the local alternatives and you have to pay shipping (usually $8 for overnight) but they use the best papers and supplies. The next time you’re ready to make some prints check them out. You won’t be disappointed.

Today’s shot: Making a poster
Here’s an image I just got in the mail from Bay Photo. I plan on framing it in a nice, black metal frame for Saturday’s show in Byron. Basically, I made the poster in PhotoShop and then sized it to the proper size so I could import it into Bay Photo’s online upload program. They trimmed it to the proper size so all I need to do is matte it, frame it and sign it.
